USA HIV/AIDS coordinator visits Alliance Ukraine and pledges continued support for scale-up of methadone-based treatment
On 15 October, Ambassador Mark Dybul, United States Global HIV/AIDS Coordinator, visited the International HIV/AIDS Alliance in Ukraine and affirmed US support for the scale-up of methadone-based treatment programmes in the fight against HIV. He also emphasised the importance of partnership between government and civil society to strengthen the national HIV response in Ukraine.

Life skills education for orphans and vulnerable children in India
Education in life skills has recently come to be regarded as a vital component in HIV programmes in India, particularly for young people. The complex range of issues associated with HIV that young people face such as dealing with vulnerabilities about their own or their parents status, peer pressure and stigmatisation, media exposure, and gender inequality, has led to increasing support over the last decade for the teaching of life skills.

Alliance technical support hubs encourage new horizontal cooperation
In an example of south-south collaboration through the Alliance’s new technical support hubs, Alliance India has provided specialist monitoring and evaluation (M&E) support to the Khmer HIV/AIDS NGO Alliance (KHANA), the Alliance’s linking organisation in Cambodia.

Board approval confirms the merger of the International HIV/AIDS Alliance and Health & Development Networks
The merger between the International HIV/AIDS Alliance and Health & Development Networks has been approved by the board of directors of each organisation. The merger will lead to a new joint Alliance-HDN foundation that will be an arm of the Alliance Secretariat, providing specialised support to Alliance country offices and linking organisations, and to other nationally-based civil society organisations.

Masters programme success leads to change on the ground
Five members of the Alliance’s senior management have successfully completed an 18-month Masters programme in management, with their learning already translating into change on the ground. Milly Katana from Alliance Uganda, Patricia Nawa from Alliance Zambia, Roberto Nebrida from linking organisation the Philippines NGO Support Program (PHANSuP), Andriy Klepikov from Alliance Ukraine and Sujit Ghosh from the Alliance secretariat, all completed their final module for the International Masters in Practicing Management (IMPM) at INSEAD, France, in October.

Stop AIDS Alliance launches new website
On 1 October, Stop AIDS Alliance (SAA) launched its new, enhanced website. Stop AIDS Alliance, based in Brussels, is a partnership between the International HIV/AIDS Alliance and STOP AIDS NOW! It advocates for the development and implementation of a comprehensive response to the HIV pandemic by the European Union (EU). As well as the new website, Stop AIDS Alliance now also has a new logo.

UK government minister visits the Alliance secretariat
The International HIV/AIDS Alliance welcomed UK government minister Douglas Alexander, Secretary of State for International Development, to the secretariat’s new offices in Brighton on 23 October. As well as officially opening the offices, Mr Alexander spent an hour with Alliance staff and representatives from some Brighton-based tuberculosis (TB) organisations discussing how joint HIV and TB work is improving health services in some of the world’s poorest countries.

HIV community mourns loss of Martin Flynn
The former editor of Positive Nation and committed journalist Martin Flynn sadly passed away on 23rd October 2008. Martin, who was openly HIV-positive, had recently taken on a role at the International AIDS Society. He was committed to overcoming stigma and discrimination through his work.

Missing in Mexico: 5,000 condoms
The Condomóvil – a converted truck that takes condoms and HIV prevention messages directly to the community in Mexico – was stolen last week. Although the vehicle has since been recovered, 5,000 condoms are still missing, along with sound equipment and a motor used to inflate a giant condom.

Civil society success on the ground: a new publication from the Alliance and the Global Fund
The International HIV/AIDS Alliance and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria have jointly published a report that aims to increase understanding of the interventions that the Global Fund would like to see prioritised in its country proposals. Using a series of case studies, the report illustrates the range of programmes that the Global Fund has prioritised for funding.

Report of the second International Conference on Reproductive Health Management
The conference, which took place in Bali, Indonesia in May 2008 brought together nearly 400 participants from 25 countries, who shared their experiences and expertise in managing reproductive health programmes. The event was a collaborative effort between PHANSuP, the Alliance’s linking organisation in the Philippines, UNFPA Indonesia, the National Family Planning Coordination Board of Indonesia and the International Movement of Reproductive Health Managers and Advocates.

The Alliance's UK secretariat is moving!
The UK secretariat is moving offices and Alliance secretariat staff will not be contactable by telephone or email on Thursday 2 and Friday 3 October 2008 while moving takes place. The new offices will open at 10.00am on Monday 6 October, when normal service will resume. Don’t forget to update your address book! Email addresses and phone numbers will remain unchanged.

Working with government and civil society in Uganda
The International HIV/AIDS Alliance is working closely with government and civil society partners to deliver HIV projects in Uganda in its new role as Technical Management Agent for Uganda’s Civil Society Fund. The new role will see the Alliance working with Uganda’s Ministry of Health, its Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development and local government to develop technical support systems to scale up community-based HIV prevention, treatment, care and support services.

Cycling for the Alliance
16-year-old student Christian Peters usually travels the 560km journey from the UK to see his family in Germany by aeroplane. This year he decided to reduce his carbon footprint by cycling the journey instead, raising money for the International HIV/AIDS Alliance and two other charities along the way. Christian tells us more about his experience.

HIV and tuberculosis co-infection must be a policy priority in Bangladesh
A study by HASAB, the Alliance’s linking organisation in Bangladesh has highlighted that the country lacks an effective, coordinated policy action plan to address HIV and tuberculosis co-infection. The study also discovered a lack of public information about the risk of co-infection and inadequate skills among health care service providers to address the issue, and makes recommendations on how to improve the situation.

KHANA jointly organises national AIDS conference in Cambodia
From 10 to 12 September 2008, hundreds of policy makers, activists, people living with HIV, sex workers and men who have sex with men gathered in Phnom Penh for Cambodia’s third National AIDS Conference, jointly organised by KHANA, the Alliance’s linking organisation in Cambodia. Participants discussed Cambodia’s progress on HIV and examined challenges and solutions for the future as part of the conference theme, ‘A greater multi-sectoral response to HIV and AIDS: towards universal access in Cambodia’.

Act now for health
Act now for health, a joint campaign by Action for Global Health, the Global Movement for Children, Oxfam International, Save the Children UK and WorldVision International, is calling for world governments to ensure that health is a priority in 2008.
2008 is the mid-way point to achieving the Millennium Development Goals by 2015, and also marks the 30-year anniversary of the Declaration of Alma Ata – a declaration upholding the right to health and calling on the international community to make healthcare for all a reality by the year 2000.
