The process so far
The Alliance is pleased to be partnering the UK Guardian newspaper to find aspiring UK-based journalists who care about the developing world and in particular HIV.
The competition closed on 6 May 2008. We will update this page with more information when the finalists are selected.
HIV remains one of the greatest threats facing our world.
Every day over 6,800 people are infected with HIV and over 5,700 die from AIDS - most because of inadequate access to HIV prevention and treatment.
Huge progress has been made in the developed world to reduce the spread of HIV and meet the challenge of AIDS. In the developing world it’s a very different story.
Sub-Saharan Africa is bearing the greatest burden of the epidemic. More than two out of three adults and nearly 90% of children infected with HIV live in this region. In Asia an estimated 4.9 million people were living with HIV in 2007, 440,000 of those became newly infected in the previous 12 months.
What is the Alliance doing?
The Alliance is a global partnership of nationally based organisations who are working to support community action on AIDS in developing countries.
We provide support to organisations from more than 40 developing countries for over 3,000 projects that reach some of the poorest and most vulnerable communities with HIV prevention, care, support and improved access to treatment.
In particular we work to ensure that those who tend to be marginalised in society or who are at increased risk of HIV, such as people living with HIV, injecting drug users, men who have sex with men and sex workers, are actively involved in tackling HIV.
Why is your contribution important?
By choosing to write about HIV you are helping to increase the profile of these important issues – showing people what is happening and what more needs to be done to effectively reduce the spread of HIV in the developing world.
