Methadone roll-out

Methadone substitution therapy starts in Ukraine
Following the success of Alliance Ukraine’s campaigning to introduce methadone substitution maintenance therapy for injecting drug users, the rollout of methadone to patients in Kyiv, Odesa and Zaporizhzhya started this month.

Around the world

Using bicycles and motorbikes to spread the HIV message in Uganda
In ceremonies across Uganda, the Alliance has been awarding its network support agents with bicycles, motorcycles and grants, which will help them carry out their HIV support work more effectively.

Kenya: adapting to a changing epidemic
Alliance implementing partner Women Fighting AIDS in Kenya is adapting its services in line with the country’s changing HIV response. As more people are able to access HIV treatment through the public health care system, WOFAK will focus on supporting more people to access and adhere to treatment.

Madagascar meeting prompts decision-makers to act against discrimination

A meeting organised by Alliance Madagascar, in which men who have sex with men spoke about the discrimination that they face, prompted key local decision makers, including journalists and local authority representatives, to take action.

Senegal meeting allows civil society organisations to share their experiences
Civil society organisations have contributed significantly to Senegal’s HIV response. This was the message from the executive secretary of Senegal’s national AIDS council at a two-day meeting organised by Alliance linking organisation ANCS in Senegal. The meeting allowed civil society organisations implementing the Global Fund programme in the country to share their experiences and learn from each other.

Personal stories

Antiretrovirals bring new life and new hope
Sarah Olgah, a widow from Kenya, is a longstanding member of the Alliance’s implementing partner, WOFAK, and a trained peer educator. She tells her inspiring story of how antiretrovirals have brought her new life and given her hope.

SEMUS – turning lives around

Antoine Nanéma and Lisetta Ouédraogo Yako tell us about the impact that SEMUS – one of the Alliance’s partners in Burkina Faso – has had on their lives.

Policy and advocacy

2015 health goals need increased funding and practical action from Europe
With seven years to go, the Millennium Development Goals are still achievable – but only with more action from Europe. This was the message from Action for Global Health at a European Parliament Development Committee meeting.

Safeguarding the rights of drug users is essential for an effective HIV response
Excluding drug users from health services and from decisions that impact on their lives is undermining the HIV response, according to the Alliance, and should specifically be addressed in WHO, UNAIDS and UNODC guidance.

New resources setting out the case for involving people who use drugs in policy and programming are now available in English and Russian.

Competition for resources threatening health responses
According to the Alliance, competition for scarce resources between supporters of disease-specific funding and wider health-systems strengthening is threatening the solidarity and partnerships that were built at the last Japanese G8 summit eight years ago, and threatening the effectiveness of global health responses.

Knowledge management

Sharing knowledge and learning across the world
Alliance India and its partners have hosted two successful learning exchanges, with Alliance staff and partners from Myanmar, and from Ukraine and Zambia.
