Alliance members win awards at ICASA 2008
Alliance members won several awards at the 15th International Conference on AIDS and STIs in Africa (ICASA), held in Dakar, Senegal on 3-7 December.

Injecting drug use, harm reduction and substitution treatment: a good practice update

Learning exchange leads to successful Myanmar funding bid
Earlier this year, an Alliance secretariat-funded horizontal learning exchange enabled staff from Alliance Myanmar to visit successful children’s programmes set up by the Alliance in India. The knowledge and experience from the exchange has now led to a successful funding bid in Myanmar.

Alliance Myanmar wins new funding to develop its work with children
The Alliance in Myanmar has successfully secured a two and a half year grant from the European Union, which will allow it to develop the work of its ten community partners with orphans and vulnerable children.

Alliance welcomes two new trustees and says a big thank-you to Jens Van Roey
The Alliance welcomed two new trustees at its November 2008 board meeting. Kevin Ryan and Fatimata Sy both have extensive HIV experience and joined as Jens Van Roey stepped down after nine years of loyal service.

UK secretariat becomes accredited member of the Alliance
The UK secretariat has been successfully accredited following an extensive evaluation and review process. The International HIV/AIDS Alliance in China has already been formally endorsed by the accreditation system, meeting the high quality standards required to be part of the Alliance group.

Watchdog organisation launched to safeguard health services for marginalised groups in Bolivia
The Observatory, a new watchdog organisation, has been launched in Bolivia as part of the Alliance’s Andes Advocacy project. The Observatory will monitor government policy, ensure the observance of existing legislation, and report on the delivery of health services to key population groups.

USA HIV/AIDS coordinator visits Alliance Ukraine and pledges continued support for scale-up of methadone-based treatment
On 15 October, Ambassador Mark Dybul, United States Global HIV/AIDS Coordinator, visited the International HIV/AIDS Alliance in Ukraine and affirmed US support for the scale-up of methadone-based treatment programmes in the fight against HIV. He also emphasised the importance of partnership between government and civil society to strengthen the national HIV response in Ukraine.

Life skills education for orphans and vulnerable children in India
Education in life skills has recently come to be regarded as a vital component in HIV programmes in India, particularly for young people. The complex range of issues associated with HIV that young people face such as dealing with vulnerabilities about their own or their parents status, peer pressure and stigmatisation, media exposure, and gender inequality, has led to increasing support over the last decade for the teaching of life skills.

Alliance technical support hubs encourage new horizontal cooperation
In an example of south-south collaboration through the Alliance’s new technical support hubs, Alliance India has provided specialist monitoring and evaluation (M&E) support to the Khmer HIV/AIDS NGO Alliance (KHANA), the Alliance’s linking organisation in Cambodia.

Act now for health
Act now for health, a joint campaign by Action for Global Health, the Global Movement for Children, Oxfam International, Save the Children UK and WorldVision International, is calling for world governments to ensure that health is a priority in 2008.
2008 is the mid-way point to achieving the Millennium Development Goals by 2015, and also marks the 30-year anniversary of the Declaration of Alma Ata – a declaration upholding the right to health and calling on the international community to make healthcare for all a reality by the year 2000.
