Maximising effective management at the Alliance

In April 2007, five candidates from across the Alliance started the International Masters Programme in Practicing Management. The Alliance is the only not-for-profit organisation participating in the course. The Alliance sees this as the first year in an ongoing programme that will create a group of senior managers with advanced skills in leadership and organisational strategy to help the development of the Alliance. It is hoped that their shared experiences and learning will also lead to productive partnerships with the corporate sector course participants and the participating business schools, and to new innovations for Alliance management and programming.

Not only will the Alliance benefit directly from the skills that all five candidates will develop throughout the programme, but all the participants will be documenting their experiences and providing feedback to colleagues across the Alliance. The group will also support fundraising for future generations of IMPM students from the Alliance.

Milly Katana from the Uganda country office, Patricia Nawa from the Zambia country office, Roberto Nebrida from linking organisation the Philippines NGO Support Program (PHANSuP), Andriy Klepikov from Alliance Ukraine and Sujit Ghosh from the Alliance secretariat have completed their first two-week module of the 16-month programme.

“We cannot underestimate the importance of leadership and strategy in achieving the Alliance’s ambitions,” said Sujit Ghosh. “The programme gives us the opportunity to reflect on our organisational strategies and culture, and offers us different tools and approaches. Linking with both the corporate sector and academia gives us a broader perspective, especially around how to deal with change while maximising our impact.”

The International Masters Programme in Practicing Management is a management development programme run jointly by five business schools: the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, Lancaster University Management School, UK, McGill Faculty of Management, Canada, INSEAD in France, and one of a group of business schools in Japan and Korea.
