Linking anti-stigma training to national policy work
A training workshop on stigma jointly organised by Alliance Côte d'Ivoire and its AIDS ministry saw the formation of a core team to develop anti-stigma tools for the country and a commitment to integrate anti-stigma activities into the ministry's action-plan. The Alliance's regional stigma training team (based in Alliance Zambia and part of the Alliance's Africa Regional Programme) facilitated the training.

Red Ribbon Award recognises FID's innovative work to reduce stigma and discrimination towards transgenders
Fortaleciendo la Diversidad (FID), a community-based organisation of transgenders from San Luis Potosí, Mexico, has been specially recognised in the 2008 Red Ribbon Awards for their efforts to take action on HIV. FID was selected as the winner of the promoting human rights category for their outstanding contribution to defending the human rights of transgenders in Mexico.

Giving a voice to sex workers in Madagascar
In Madagascar, sex workers are among those most vulnerable to HIV and sexually transmitted infections. Yet they have some of the poorest access to prevention and treatment services. A new leaflet available in English and French highlights some of the issues that sex workers in Madagascar face and outlines the work that FIMIZORE, a network of sex workers organisations, is doing to address them.

Alliance India takes its policy messages to UN high-level meeting
At the UN high-level meeting on AIDS in New York in June 2008, Alliance India’s Sonal Mehta urged leaders to be bold and not discriminate between “deserving” and “undeserving” people living with HIV. Speaking as a civil society representative in one of the panel discussions, Sonal explained how key populations living with HIV faced stigma on three levels and appealed to leaders to support their human rights to health.

Cambodia law threatens effectiveness of HIV prevention work with sex workers
Sex workers, entertainment workers and AIDS activists in Cambodia have expressed concern a new law introduced in February on human trafficking and sexual exploitation could drive sex workers underground and undermine HIV prevention efforts in the country.

Medics learn not to judge
Sex workers often face stigma and discrimination by medical staff which stops them from accessing health services. Alliance Ukraine is addressing this by training medical staff to provide non-judgemental, appropriate health services.

New Alliance programme to increase uptake of HIV services in Haiti
The Alliance is starting a three-year project to tackle HIV-related stigma and discrimination in Haiti through support from the Big Lottery Fund. The Alliance, in partnership with POZ (Promoteurs Objectif Zérosida, a Haitian non-governmental organisation), will be working with community leaders to reduce the stigma and discrimination faced by people living with HIV – with the aim of increasing access to prevention and treatment services.

Speaking out against HIV discrimination in Myanmar
The message from Alliance Myanmar this World AIDS day was that people, especially those living with HIV, need to speak out to stop HIV discrimination. One of Alliance Myanmar’s partners, Myanmar Positive group has been leading by example – by organising an art exhibition about HIV positive leaders in Myanmar, demanding that world leaders keep their promise on universal access, and supporting HIV positive people in hospital.
