Emerging HIV/AIDS programming and policy issues under the spotlight at Alliance donor meeting

06 March 2006

The Alliance and the International Planned Parenthood Federation co-hosted two days of meetings and consultation with some of its key donors at the end of January 2006. The meeting both reinforced the value of the Alliance's work, and its approach with donors. Participants commented on the benefit of the meeting in furthering discussion on HIV/AIDS and sexual and reproductive health and rights integration, vulnerability, the policy environment, and the benefits of the Alliance's support model.

The first day’s meeting, co-hosted with the International Planned Parenthood Federation, held on 31 January in London, looked at the linkages between HIV/AIDS and sexual and reproductive health and rights. Over 40 donor representatives attended the joint day in London.

The second day’s consultation for current and prospective Alliance donors, held in Brighton, looked in more detail at emerging issues in HIV/AIDS programming and policy, and, with 15 donor representatives attending, allowed for more dynamic interaction. The three main sessions of the Alliance-led meeting, which prompted valuable discussions among the participants, covered:

  • vulnerability reduction: dealing with stigma, discrimination and violence
  • the policy environment and its impact on civil society organisations
  • building an International HIV/AIDS Alliance of national NGO support organisations.

Donors commented that the meetings gave them an opportunity to both confirm existing knowledge and learn more. Building the connections between the Alliance and the International Planned Parenthood Federation was also seen as valuable.
